28 Day Cleanse: Before & After

Hi friends! I hope you are all enjoying your holidays. I know I have been! It's Christmas Eve here and I am looking forward to spending this evening and tomorrow with my family. 

In my last post, which you can read here, I spoke about my new routines to help combat the winter blues. One of those new routines was following a cleanse that I read about in the book Medical Medium by Anthony Williams. I hadn't been super inconsistent with taking care of myself. Healthy choices were sort of in a spurt fashion and then I would easily give into the craving for something with gluten, or alcohol, or so much chocolate or not making it to the gym or sleeping too much... just general depression and funk stuff. Even though all of that food tastes good and it is nice to sleep, it didn't make me feel better. In fact, I was super swollen at every joint, bloated, and had gained a significant amount of weight. And frankly, I was tired of it. I needed more of a kick than all of my false starts. I decided to re-read Medical Medium and the cleanse in it really caught my eye. It felt like it was time. I needed to recommit and do so in a way that would really motivate me. With Thanksgiving over and Christmas not for 4 weeks I decided the timing was perfect since the cleanse itself was 4 weeks long. I really enjoy re-committing during this time of year because otherwise it is basically a free-for-all with all of the goodies. And as a binger, I do NOT need any extra reason to give into all that. 

So what did the cleanse entail? I started every morning with 16 ounces of fresh celery juice. Consuming this first thing in the morning is incredibly healing, especially if you struggle with digestion, skin problems (like eczema or psoriasis), arthritis, fatty liver, and a whole host of other ailments. Then the rest of the day is really focused on fresh, raw foods. My breakfast was a smoothie every morning, lunch was a giant salad, and dinner was another giant salad. For snacks I ate dates, apples, or oranges. I also drank plenty of water and herbal tea throughout the day. The fruits and veggies I chose were from the recommendations from the cleanse.I did my best to have a large variety of fruits and veggies so I didn't get bored. I found that this was super successful for me!

The only thing I struggled with? How freaking cold it is out and here I am eating cold foods! So I admit I did make a soup of mushrooms, onions, garlic, and ginger about 6 times over the 28 days for dinner and then another dinner was sauteed broccoli with homemade marinara. I have been craving soup and marinara for weeks now! Cravings are super funny. I really didn't want crap. Just warm soups. Comfort food. I figure there are WAAAY worse ways I could have "cheated." 

So did it work? Absolutely. Right away my swelling started to go down. I officially have knuckles again! Every joint feels significantly better. I don't wake up anymore feeling like garbage. I also lots 14 lbs, a pant size, and got a ton of energy back. And I can wear both my wedding and engagement rings again!

So what's next? I have to slowly transition into more of a "normal" diet (obviously that's funny since my diet is already pretty abnormal). I still want to focus on raw foods, particularly the celery juice and the smoothies. I have loved adding supplements to my smoothies and feeling like my morning really starts off with healing first. Then I think eating a big salad every day is also super good for me. So mostly it's dinner where I think I have the opportunity to be more creative (or lunch if I have the salad for dinner).

 I feel like I have defined myself by being vegan. Then gluten-free vegan. And now, while I am still avoiding all animal products and gluten, I don't want to be defined by what I don't eat. I want to instead focus on what I do eat, which is super nutritious food. I eat to feel good. I eat to give myself energy. I eat to heal. I also eat because it tastes good but I don't think that should always be my top priority. Of course super salty, sugary, and fatty foods taste the best. I am not crazy. But I love not feeling like shit. So, for me, I adjust accordingly.

My face specifically. My face swells so much with I am inflamed. Just that difference alone makes me happy!


One week down. Already my face looks so much more defined and less puffy.


 2 weeks down/halfway. I have cheek bones! Woo hoo!


3 weeks down.


 And today, 4 weeks from the start of the cleanse. My stomach is so much flatter and my face isn't puffy at all.


Was it easy? No. Was it worth it? Yes! If you are looking to feel better I highly recommend considering your diet. I promise if you eat more fruits and vegetables you WILL feel better.
