5 Things

Greetings! It has been a hot minute since I last posted so I thought I would jump in with a short one! Here are 5 things I have been up to lately:

1. No Poo. Yup, I have been experimenting with ending my relationship with conventional shampoo and conditioner. See, since I was a teenager I have been dependent upon daily shampoo, specifically tea tree shampoo, to prevent psoriasis breakouts. When I first became to rely on tea tree shampoo I did not know I had psoriasis but I had some sort of sores popping up on my scalp so my hairdresser at the time recommended it and it stuck. At age 20 I was diagnosed with psoriasis and my current process was pretty much covering it, but she recommended I throw in some T-gel once a week so be sure.  I know most of you are probably thinking that daily hair washing is a normal thing. It may surprise you that many (if not all) hairdressers would tell you it is actually not good for your hair to wash it daily. It strips your hair of natural oils and can be quite damaging. But wait, I am sure you are thinking, my hair gets oily if I don't wash it everyday! But that, my friends, is because your scalp is so confused as to how much oil it should produce that is goes overboard and produces too much since the shampoo just stripped it all! The typical recommendations is to wash your hair every couple of days. Now when I have tried this (either while camping or when sick or a time when I just did not wash my hair) my psoriasis would go out of control, producing many, very painful sores. Then I would wash my hair and it would be even more painful, but then the sores would heal. I decided to try this "No Poo" method and see if my scalp could sort itself out. I am still working out my scalp's process, but I am happy to say 6 weeks have gone by and I have not shampooed or conditioned my hair! 2. Listening to podcasts via PodBean! It's a new app I downloaded to my android that is completely free and easy to use. You can find any podcast that is on itunes and you can download the podcast while on wifi so no data usage! Some of my favorites right now are: Medical Medium, Rich Roll, and Meal Mentor. The latter actually features ME, Stacy, on season 2, episode 11. Check it out!

3. I am going to be presenting at the Association in Nursing Professional Development Conference in New Orleans this July! My colleague and I submitted an abstract on a program we developed to help orient new educators into their role. I am very excited to present at my 2nd National Conference! I also have never been to New Orleans so that should be fun. PLUS I present on my birthday so it will be pretty special. Tyler is planning to join me towards the end of my trip so we can sight see. I cannot wait!

4. Homemade almond milk, homemade peanut butter, and sprouts! These are 3 things I have started to have on rotation at home and it is safe to say it is now just a part of my routine to make these delicious foods at home! The almond milk I make weekly, which I use for oatmeal, predominately. I take a cup of almonds, soak them in 1.5 cups filtered water for 4-8 hours, drain them, add the almonds to a blender with 6 cups filtered water, blend, then pour through a filter, and have almond  milk! It takes 10 minutes tops of actual work. I then compost the almond waste, or give it to my dogs. For the peanut butter, I take about 3 cups of peanuts and add them to a food processor for about 5 minutes until smooth. Done. I do this monthly. Last, I put about 1 tbsp alfalfa sprout seeds in a jar with filtered water to soak overnight, then drain. Place in a cool, dark place. Then over a few days I rinse the seeds daily and then drain completely. After about 4 days, the sprouts grow and then need a little sunlight. From there I put them on a shelf near a window to turn green, still doing my daily rinse, and then they are done. It takes about a week, which is pretty dang fast! And a whole lot cheaper than buying them at the store!
