The Other Grains with Gluten

Happy Friday everyone! The elimination diet is still going strong, although I am very looking forward to the next 2 weeks to fly by!

I introduced barley into my diet on Wednesday because I wanted to see if the reaction I had to whole grains was due to wheat or gluten. Well, unfortunately the same thing happened to me after I ate barley. The next morning I woke up with swollen, painful hands. Also, 2 days later I still have a bit of the swelling and definitely the pain in my wrists and the back of my right hand especially, making typing a bit more of a challenge today so this post will be short. 

Today I introduced corn so I will let you know how it goes. Next week I will introduce citrus as well as fermented foods (like pickles and vinegar). The following week will be the last one and I will be introducing alcohol on separate days so I can see which of liquor, wine, and beer I can either tolerate or have the least adverse effects. 

Of interest, I have read a few books recently, "The McDougal Program" by Dr. John McDougal, as well as "Wheat Belly" by Dr. William Davis. I am currently reading "The End of Dieting" by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. What seems to be pretty consistent between these physicians, in terms of people with arthritis, is cutting out all wheat products, as well as the suggested elimination of night shades, dairy and citrus. Now I am curious how my body responds to citrus since the nightshade suggestion was spot on (we shall see!). Dr. Davis is a proponent of a Paleo-like diet while the other two are plant-based. I was reassured to see some common ground between these two lifestyles that both boast a reduction in inflammation. So, to those who have arthritis. I would recommend seeing if you can either decrease or eliminate gluten, dairy, nightshades, and potentially citrus. My guess is reduce or elimnate alcohol too (womp, womp), but we shall see. It sounds like the literature supports this and I also recommend from firsthand experience.
